Board Reaches Halfway Milestone for Statewide Bovine TB Surveillance
All 750 cattle herds have tested negative for the disease.

St. Paul, Minn – The Board of Animal Health announced today that the 750th Minnesota cattle herd has been tested for bovine tuberculosis as part of the Statewide Bovine TB Surveillance. This represents the halfway milestone in the testing campaign, aimed at locating and eliminating any infection that might remain in the state and bringing Minnesota closer to regaining TB-free status.

“I am heartened that all the herds tested so far for this campaign have tested negative for TB. The support we have received from Minnesota cattle farmers has been tremendous,” said Bill Hartmann, Board of Animal Health Executive Director and State Veterinarian. “Because there has been such great cooperation, we have moved along at a quick pace and I am optimistic that we will be able to continue at this rate.”

The statewide surveillance, which began in September 2006, is part of a comprehensive plan authored by the Board with state and federal partners to eliminate bovine TB from Minnesota’s livestock and wildlife populations. In addition to the 750 statewide surveillance herds, 302 herds have been tested as part of the state’s disease investigation and area testing efforts.
